Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Marine Transportation
The University of Alaska Southeast-Ketchikan Campus invites applications for a nine-month tenure track Assistant Professor of Marine Transportation. The successful candidate will teach classes and provide service in support of degree and certificate programs at the UAS Maritime Training Center. Course assignments will depend on the successful candidate’s qualifications, but may include classes such as Basic Training, Proficiency in Survival Craft, Radar Observer, Master 100 Ton and Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel, and other above deck/mates courses; and/or courses as part of the Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED) curriculum; and/or support operation of a ship/bridge simulator. This is an excellent opportunity to join a team of enthusiastic faculty at the UAS Maritime Training Center in training Alaska’s maritime workforce in one of the flagship programs of the Ketchikan Campus. The successful applicant will teach courses as a primary responsibility while continuing to develop, deliver, and expand marine transportation program opportunities for students. Ketchikan is well-known for its natural beauty, for being a hub of activity in the arts and humanities, its living Indigenous cultures on the homeland of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples, and by its nickname as the Salmon Capital of the World.
The preferred candidate will possess excellent written and oral communication skills. This position requires the ability to work effectively within a complex university career education training environment. Experience working in different types of ships or in different areas of the maritime industry. Ability to work effectively with the diverse workforce in Alaska and current UAS students, including with first generation, Alaska Native, military, non-traditional, and geographically dispersed students.
The applicant should have at least two years of experience as Officer in Charge of Navigation Watch (OICNW) on a vessel of 200 GRT; OR at least five years sailing time as a licensed engineer. Experience operating a maritime simulator is desired but not required. Must possess the ability to provide excellent direct training and instruction to marine transportation students.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
· EITHER A USCG licensed 1600 Master or Third Mate Unlimited or higher; OR a USCG licensed Chief Engineer (C/E) or First Assistant Engineer (2A/E)- Unlimited Motor with steam endorsement.
· One year of experience operating a maritime simulator (such as a bridge simulator or engine room simulator).
· Bachelor's degree, teaching experience, and towing experience.
· Maritime academy or marine engineering training program graduate.
· Excellent written and oral communication skills.
· Ability to work effectively within a complex university career education training environment.
· Experience working on different types of ships or in different areas of the maritime industry.
· Ability to work effectively with the diverse workforce in Alaska and current UAS students, including with first generation, Alaska Native, military, non-traditional, and geographically-dispersed students.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· An Associate's degree or higher, or equivalent education and training.
· EITHER two years of experience as Officer in Charge of Navigation Watch (OICNW) on a vessel of 200 GRT USCG license; OR a USCG Second Assistant Engineer (2A/E)- Unlimited Motor with steam endorsement or higher.
· Ability to be USCG approved to teach marine transportation courses.
· An unrestricted Alaska driver’s license and clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving criteria is required.

This position is located on the Ketchikan Campus. This is a full-time, 9 month, represented, tenure track faculty position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package.
