Derecktor Shipyards will build a second version of its 65’ hybrid electric drive scientific catamaran for the City University of New York, to operate out of Jamaica Bay doing research in the waters off Long Island and New York Harbor.
Derecktor’s Mamaroneck, N.Y., yard in summer 2014 delivered Spirit of the Sound to The Maritime Aquarium in Norfolk, Conn., which uses the vessel for research and education on Long Island Sound.
The second vessel, to be built for CUNY in collaboration with the Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay, will meet Coast Guard subchapter T regulations.
“Researchers will be focused on environmentally responsible operation, with minimal impact on local waters,” Derecktor said in announcing the contract. That means limited use of pass-through sea water for cooling and use of keel coolers.
Like the aquarium’s vessel, the CUNY boat will have the trademarked BAE HybriDrive system, using low-emission diesel with lithium batteries and electric drive.
