Moran Towing Corp., New Canaan, Conn., held a ceremony to christen a pair of new tugboats in the Port of New York and New Jersey.

The RApport 2800 class tractor tugs, Newt Moran and Thomas C Moran, were designed by Robert Allen Ltd., Vancouver, British Columbia, and built by Master Boat Builders Inc., Coden, Ala.

The 90'x40' newbuilds are among the largest and most powerful in the Moran fleet, each delivering over 80 metric tons of bollard pull for escort and ship-assist duties.

The Newt Moran and Thomas C Moran are part of a series of tugs purpose-built and equipped to manage the increasing size and complexity of vessels calling at U.S. ports, according to Moran officials.

Each of the new tugboats is ABS Escort-rated and powered by EPA Tier 4 Caterpillar 3516E engines, producing a combined 6,770 hp. It is LEV (Low Emission Vessel) certified, significantly reducing NOx emissions. The tugs feature twin Kongsberg US255 Z-drive propulsion units.

The vessels feature expanded accommodations, improved working spaces, and modern onboard systems, including a fully integrated Rose Point electronic chart system and Starlink satellite connectivity, according to Moran.
