In June, J.M. "Mike" McCoshen was sworn in as the 12th administrator of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (GLS).

A wholly owned government corporation, GLS operates and maintains the U.S. infrastructure and waters of the St. Lawrence Seaway between Montréal and Lake Erie, while performing trade development focused on driving economic activity for the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System.

“The team and I are very excited to have Mike on board as our new administrator,” said GLS Deputy Administrator Anthony Fisher. “To have an executive of his caliber from the maritime community we serve will help us expand the reach of American energy, industrial, and agricultural exports through reliable direct water service.”

McCoshen brings over 45 years of experience in maritime transportation. He most recently led McCoshen Logistics Solutions LLC, Superior, Wis., a Great Lakes shipping-focused consulting firm. Previously, he spent 20 years as president and COO of Hallett Dock Co., Duluth, Minn. He began his career in 1976 as a heavy equipment operator at Burlington Northern — now BNSF Railway Co., Forth Worth, Texas — eventually managing the terminal’s operations.

“I want to thank President Donald J. Trump for appointing me to this key position at the U.S. Department of Transportation,” said GLS Administrator Mike McCoshen. “I fully appreciate the importance of the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System, not only to international commerce and to our national transportation system, but also to advancing America’s maritime leadership and economic vitality.”
