The Coast Guard, local responders and contractors corralled an estimated 200-gal. spill of red diesel fuel around a towboat that was damaged Friday near San Leon, Texas, according to Coast Guard officials in Houston.
The 57’x22’x8', 800-hp Capt. Bill Mantle operated by San Jacinto Towing Inc., Pasadena, Texas, sustained unspecified damage near a shipyard, and the Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit at Texas City got the call Friday afternoon that the towboat could be leaking.
The Galveston County Office of Emergency Management, the Texas General Land Office and Texas City Police Department joined in the response. By Saturday, crews from Houston-based Garner Environmental Services boomed off the listing vessel and were recovering fuel as it leaked out.
Divers were called to plug the leak. T&T Marine Salvage Inc., Houston, was contracted to pump out and right the towboat.
