Florida Marine Transporters LLC, Mandeville, La., took delivery April 12 of the Lawrence Campbell, moving closer to completion of the biggest single owner-single shipbuilder towboat-class construction program in the history of the U.S., according to the builder, Eastern Shipbuilding Group.
The vessel is the 63rd in the Canal-class series of 90’x32’x10’ towboats Panama City, Fla.-based Eastern has completed for FMT since an initial 25-vessel contract began with deliveries in 2006. In 2015 the contract was expanded to 65 towboats, with five of the most recent newbuilds delivered over the last year.
Designed by Gilbert Associates Inc., Boston, the Lawrence Campbell was built at Eastern’s Allanton Road facility. Like the other recent canal boats, it is powered by two Caterpillar 3512C Tier 3 engines each rated at 1,500 hp at 1,600 rpm, supplied by Louisiana Marine Cat Power Systems, Reserve, La. The engines turn Twin Disc MG-5600 gears with 6.03:1 reduction ratios supplied by Stewart Supply Inc., Harvey, La.
Ship’s service power is a provided by a pair of John Deere 4045AFM85 99kW Tier 3 generator-drive engines, rated at 60 Hz and putting out 208 VAC, supplied by Kennedy Engine Company Inc., Biloxi, Miss. All engines comply with Tier 3 and MARPOL standards for controlling nitrous oxide emissions from marine engines.
