Last month, the Agricultural Transportation Working Group (ATWG) submitted comments to the Transportation Department describing the challenges facing the agricultural industry, the U.S. Deaprtment of Agriculture said.

The letter also provided policy recommendations to mitigate ongoing supply chain issues, the USDA said today in its weekly Grain Transportation Report. The ATWG is a collection of agricultural producer, commodity, agribusiness, and food-related national organizations.

The letter suggested a variety of ways to strengthen agricultural transportation policy and infrastructure, including support for better balancing of agricultural exporters’ and ocean carriers’ needs, increasing investment in the inland waterways, enhancing rail competition and rate dispute procedures, and improving capacity and efficiency in trucking, the GTR said.

The comments were submitted in response to a request from the Department of Transportation seeking information on current challenges in the freight and logistics sector. Additional comments are posted at Regulations.gov.
