The floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel Liza Unity has become the first to receive the SUSTAIN-2 notation from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The vessel is owned by ExxonMobil Guyana Limited and operated by SBM Offshore.

The SUSTAIN-2 notation is part of ABS’s sustainability program, intended to help fleets meet environmental and human elements requirements aligned with the United Nations' sustainable development goals. Liza Unity previously received the SUSTAIN-1 notation in 2021 for pollution control and waste management. The SUSTAIN-2 recognition acknowledges additional attributes, including the usage of low-carbon fuels and human-centered design.

Liza Unity was the second FPSO built for ExxonMobil’s Stabroek Block development in Guyana and was the first delivered under SBM Offshore’s Fast4Ward® program. It has an installed production capacity of approximately 220,000 bbls. of oil per day.

An ABS statement noted the company has classed FPSOs since 1978, when it certified the first such vessel in U.S. waters. The organization continues to provide guidance on safety and innovation for FPSOs globally, supporting the development of larger and more complex units for sustainable operations.
