Houston-based American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has appointed Ronald J. Rábago, a retired rear admiral with the U.S. Coast Guard, as senior vice president of government services to support the company’s government maritime programs worldwide.

“Adm. Rábago brings exception government and industry experience that will further enhance the support we provide to our government clients in the U.S. and around the world,” said John McDonald, chairman and CEO of ABS. “His leadership and deep expertise across shipbuilding, acquisition, and fleet lifecycle management, as well as marine safety, security, and environmental protection for the maritime industry, directly support ABS’ mission and long-term strategic priorities.”

In his new role with ABS, Rábago will work alongside U.S. and international government stakeholders to support integrated ABS services across fleets and with industry stakeholders in the development of the maritime industry.

“I am pleased to join ABS at a time of significant change and opportunity across government maritime programs,” Rábago said. “ABS’ technical excellence and global reach make it uniquely positioned to help governments rapidly meet evolving mission and capability needs as well as broader maritime industrial base development.”

After a career spanning more than three decades, Rábago retired from the U.S. Coast Guard in 2014. At the time of his retirement, he was assistant commandant for engineering and logistics, along with the Coast Guard’s chief engineer. In the dozen years since, Rábago has held various senior executive roles within the maritime and shipbuilding industries.
