A Washington State Ferries crew diverted from its route Friday morning to assist boaters aboard a rowboat that was taking on water near Orcas Island.

The Tilikum responded at about 9:45 a.m. after receiving a call from the Coast Guard about a small craft in distress, according to Washington State Ferries.

“The rowboat was rapidly taking on water and unable to maneuver on its own,” the agency said in a Facebook post.

The ferry changed course, and crew members launched a rescue boat to reach the boaters.

“The crew of the Tilikum quickly changed course, got into a rescue boat, lowered into the water, and raced to the boaters in distress,” Washington State Ferries said.

The crew brought the boaters safely to shore. No medical treatment was required.

Washington State Ferries said its crews conduct rescue training each week and are regularly called to assist boaters, paddlers and divers in distress on the Salish Sea.

“This experience allows them to put their skills to use, keeping the Salish Sea safe for those recreating and traveling on the water,” the agency said.
