The Ohio Department of Development has appointed Taylor Abbott as executive director of the Ohio River Commission, a new state body charged with strengthening commercial navigation, economic development, and tourism along the Ohio River system.
Abbott assumed the role Jan. 5 following a December vote of the commission.
State officials said Abbott brings experience in economic development, river-based infrastructure, and workforce training. As executive director, he will oversee day-to-day operations of the commission and coordinate with state agencies, port authorities, and industry stakeholders on initiatives tied to marine cargo, terminal development, and waterfront revitalization.
“Taylor Abbott brings both regional knowledge and hands-on leadership to the Ohio River Commission,” said Lydia Mihalik, director of the Ohio Department of Development and chair of the commission. “His experience across economic development, workforce training, and river-based projects positions him to lead the commission and strengthen the Ohio River’s role as an economic driver for the Ohio River Valley and broader region.”
Abbott most recently served as treasurer of Monroe County, Ohio, and president of the county land bank. In that role he supported projects aimed at redevelopment of river communities and expansion of maritime employment.
One of his primary initiatives was creation of the Inland Waterways Maritime Complex, described by state officials as Ohio’s first inland waters maritime academy. The program is designed to train 200 to 250 students annually for careers in towboat operations, vessel maintenance, and shoreside logistics.
The Ohio River Commission was created last year through Ohio Senate Bill 54. The panel’s mandate includes promoting economic development along the Ohio River and its tributaries, supporting marine cargo terminal operations, and expanding travel and tourism opportunities tied to the waterway.
