Superior Ag has opened a new 32,000-ton dry fertilizer terminal on the Ohio River in Rockport, Ind., adding direct river access to its crop-nutrient distribution network.
The facility includes a 600-ton-per-hour barge receiving system capable of unloading a full barge in about three hours. The terminal was developed at the former Summit River Terminal site in southern Spencer County.
Superior Ag formally opened the facility Aug. 25 following completion of construction. The farmer-owned cooperative said the terminal will be used to receive, store and distribute fertilizer serving customers in southwestern Indiana, northern Kentucky and surrounding areas.
Direct access to the Ohio River gives Superior Ag another option for moving bulk fertilizer into its distribution system and is intended to increase product availability during peak application periods.
“The Ohio River Terminal project would not have been possible without the support of our board of directors, employees, contractors, business partners, local leaders, and cooperative members,” Superior Ag President and CEO Richard Lloyd said. “Today’s celebration is a testament to what can be accomplished when people come together to invest in the future of agriculture and our local communities.”
The terminal includes unloading, storage and material-handling systems for dry fertilizer. Product received by barge can be moved into storage at the site before being distributed through Superior Ag’s agronomy network.
“This dry fertilizer terminal represents an investment in the future of agriculture across our region,” Lloyd said. “By expanding our infrastructure and improving access to key crop nutrients, we are strengthening our ability to support our members and customers for generations to come.”
Superior Ag operates 13 agronomy locations and six grain elevators, along with a feed mill, feed store and two retail fuel locations. The cooperative serves farmers in southwestern Indiana, northern and central Kentucky, and neighboring portions of Illinois.
