Sterling Shipyard, Port Neches, Texas, has delivered the Laguna Gulf, the first vessel in a 13-tug construction program scheduled to run through 2029.

The 99'×43' tractor tug was delivered to Gulf LNG Tugs of Brownsville LLC, a joint venture comprising Bay-Houston Management LLC, Moran Towing Corp. and Suderman & Young Towing Co. The joint venture and its affiliates are contracted to provide marine services at five LNG terminals along the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The Laguna Gulf is powered by twin engines producing a combined 7,000 hp and has a bollard pull of more than 80 metric tons. The tug is equipped for ship-assist and terminal-support operations and carries ABS Fire Fighting Vessel 1 classification.

The vessel is the 13th completed tug based on the Z-Tech 30-80 design from Robert Allan Ltd.

“Delivery of the Laguna Gulf marks an important milestone for Sterling Shipyard and represents the first of an orderbook for three LNG projects along with nine other harbor tugboats, for a total of 13, contracted for delivery through 2029,” said Harry Murdock, CEO of Sterling Shipyard.

The remaining 12 vessels are scheduled for delivery through 2029.

WorkBoat reached out to Sterling Shipyard and Gulf LNG for further specs on the new vessel.
