The Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket Steamship Authority has promoted its director of maintenance and engineering, Mark H. Amundsen, to the role of chief operating officer.

The Steamship Authority is the statutory regulatory body for all ferry operations between mainland Massachusetts and the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket, as well an operator of ferry services between the mainland and the islands.

As chief operating officer, Amundsen will be responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing all activities of the marine operations and shoreside operations departments, the engineering department, and the operations and communications center.

Amundsen joined the Steamship Authority in 2019 and has served as the director of marine operations and director of engineering and maintenance. He recently oversaw a program at Alabama Shipyard, Mobile, Ala., to convert three offshore supply vessels — Barnstable, Aquinnah, and Monomoy — in preparation for their entry into the authority’s operational fleet.

Amundsen has more than 30 years of experience in operations, strategic planning, technical management, and engineering in the international shipping industry. He received his bachelor’s degree in marine engineering at Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, Maine, and is a licensed chief engineer of steam and motor vessels.
