The Transportation Institute has named Sara Fuentes president of the organization, succeeding longtime maritime advocate James L. Henry, who will remain chairman.
Fuentes previously served as TI’s vice president for government affairs and will now lead the organization’s efforts supporting the U.S.-flag merchant marine and American maritime workforce.
“I am honored by the confidence of the board and grateful for Jim Henry’s extraordinary leadership,” Fuentes said in a statement. “TI has long been a leading voice for the U.S.-flag maritime industry and the American merchant marine. This industry touches nearly every part of American life.”
Fuentes said she plans to continue working with industry stakeholders, labor groups, and policymakers to support policies aimed at strengthening the domestic maritime industry and national security.
Henry, who became TI president in 1987 and chairman in 1990, will continue serving as chairman of the organization and chair of the National Defense Transportation Association’s Sealift Committee. During his tenure, Henry played a role in several major U.S. maritime policy initiatives, including the formation of the American Maritime Partnership and the creation of the Maritime Security Program.
“Sara is a highly skilled leader and a relentless advocate for ensuring a strong U.S.-flag merchant marine and maintaining national strength through a resilient maritime industry,” Henry said. “We are seeing in real time how important the U.S. maritime industry is in keeping our economy moving while supporting our national defense.”
According to TI, Fuentes has been involved in advocacy efforts tied to supply chain resilience, sealift readiness, shipbuilding, the maritime industrial base, Jones Act protections, and funding for maritime security programs. Her work has also included support for workforce development initiatives and cargo preference programs such as Food for Peace.
In addition to her role at TI, Fuentes serves as vice president of the American Maritime Partnership and holds leadership and board positions with several maritime and policy organizations, including the Navy League of the United States and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute.
