Rolls-Royce has introduced an exhaust after-treatment system designed to bring its mtu Series 2000 marine engines into compliance with International Maritime Organization Tier III emissions requirements.

Developed with exhaust after-treatment specialist Eminox, the selective catalytic reduction system will allow offshore supply vessels, ferries, crewboats and patrol boats powered by Series 2000 engines to operate in emission control areas, including the North Sea and Baltic Sea.

The system uses an aqueous urea solution to convert nitrogen oxides in the engine exhaust into nitrogen and water. Rolls-Royce said it reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by 75% compared with IMO Tier II limits.

“With this new offering, all models in the mtu Series 2000 are now available with integrated SCR systems,” said Lukas Köhler, senior vice president, global marine and mining, Rolls-Royce Power Systems. “We have already launched a new, flexible and compact solution for the more powerful mtu Series 4000. This enables us to equip our customers with future-proof propulsion systems to meet the challenges of modern shipping.”

Depending on the engine’s load profile, the Series 2000 after-treatment system is designed for a service life of up to 16,000 operating hours. The system does not require compressed air for urea dosing and can be configured for installation in a range of vessel designs.

The addition completes Rolls-Royce’s Tier III after-treatment portfolio for its primary mtu marine propulsion engine lines.
