Hornblower Group is seeking a shipyard to repower NYC Ferry’s K-Class vessels with EPA Tier 4 engines and convert their existing keel-cooled systems to raw-water cooling.
The NYC Ferry operator issued a request for proposals Aug. 31 for the work, which is scheduled to begin Dec. 2. Proposals are due Sept. 28.
The selected yard will replace the ferries’ existing Tier 3 engines with Baudouin 12M26.3 Tier 4 engines equipped with selective catalytic reduction systems. Hornblower will provide the engines as owner-furnished equipment.
The work will also include converting the vessels from keel cooling to raw-water cooling, requiring new hull penetrations and modifications to the sea chests. Exhaust trunking will be upgraded to accommodate the new engines and meet applicable emissions and backpressure requirements.
Hornblower is looking for a yard capable of completing the full scope on schedule and within its proposed budget while meeting the company’s administrative requirements.
The procurement schedule calls for prospective bidders to submit notices of intent and nondisclosure agreements by Sept. 4. A preproposal conference and vessel tour are scheduled for Sept. 9, followed by a Sept. 11 deadline for written questions.
