Alex Kryska began his tenure as general manager of the Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket Steamship Authority on Jan. 12, following the completion of a three-year contract approved by the authority’s board late last year.
Kryska was unanimously selected for the position by the board at its Nov. 13, 2025, meeting. Contract terms were approved at a Dec. 4, 2025, meeting, and the agreement was subsequently executed.
“Alex has a strong background in the marine industry and related businesses and has the necessary skills to address the many challenges and opportunities facing the Steamship Authority and similar organizations,” said Board Chair James M. Malkin, who represents Martha’s Vineyard.
The Steamship Authority serves as the state’s designated regulator for ferry transportation between mainland Massachusetts and the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, and also operates ferry services on those routes.
Kryska brings nearly three decades of experience in fleet operations across the maritime, aviation, and transportation sectors. He most recently served as chief operating officer at PROP, a San Francisco-based company that operates a public-private commuter ferry service. His previous experience includes positions with ACME Technologies, WestEd, and Covenant Aviation Security.
He holds an undergraduate degree in transportation business administration from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and a Master of Business Administration in global business operations from San Francisco State University.
Kryska succeeds Robert B. Davis, who announced in September 2024 that he would step down as general manager and transition into an advisory role. Davis was appointed general manager in 2016 and began serving in the position in 2017. He joined the Steamship Authority in 1986 and held several senior roles, including treasurer and comptroller, before becoming general manager.
