Kongsberg Maritime has added two larger models to its rim-drive tunnel thruster range, targeting vessels that require increased thrust and dynamic positioning capabilities.

The RD-TT 2300 and RD-TT 2600 feature propeller diameters of approximately 7.5' and 8.5', respectively. The units are rated at 2,100 kW (~2,816 hp), and 2,700 kW (~3,621 hp).

The expanded range was developed in response to demand from the offshore sector for higher-powered tunnel thrusters. Potential applications include offshore construction, subsea, renewable energy, passenger, research and other specialty vessels, Kongsberg said in a statement.

“The industry continues to seek solutions that can deliver higher performance without compromising efficiency, reliability or environmental performance,” said Per Håvard Siljan Hjukse, executive vice president, propulsion and handling, Kongsberg Maritime. “With the introduction of our new 2300 and 2600 Rim-Drive Tunnel Thrusters, we are responding directly to customer demand for larger, more powerful thrusters optimised for modern DP operations.”

Kongsberg’s rim-drive design integrates a permanent magnet electric motor into the propeller rim. Unlike conventional tunnel thrusters, the system does not require a gearbox or vertical drive shaft, reducing the number of mechanical components and associated maintenance requirements, Kongsberg said.

The design is also intended to reduce underwater radiated noise, an important consideration for research vessels, passenger vessels and other applications requiring improved acoustic performance.

“Our proven Rim-Drive technology has demonstrated clear advantages in efficiency, noise reduction and operational performance,” Hjukse said. “These new models further strengthen our offering and open up opportunities for a wider range of offshore vessels to benefit from the technology.”
