HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division has received a $99 million contract modification from the Navy to conduct sea trials for the Zumwalt-class destroyer Lyndon B. Johnson (DDG 1002), the company announced Oct. 19.
The destroyer arrived at Ingalls’ Pascagoula, Miss., shipyard in January 2022 for the installation, activation and testing of its combat systems. The new award covers system testing and sea trials as part of the Navy’s phased delivery approach, according to HII.
“This award reflects the Navy’s continued confidence in the Ingalls team to execute the critical system test and sea trials work essential to the Navy’s phased delivery approach,” Brian Blanchette, Ingalls Shipbuilding president, said in a statement. “Our shipbuilders are proud to help deliver DDG 1002 and prepare her for future fleet operations.”
While at Ingalls, Lyndon B. Johnson is also receiving modernization upgrades that include integration of the Conventional Prompt Strike weapon system. HII said the destroyer will be the Navy’s second platform equipped with the system.
The Zumwalt-class destroyers feature electric propulsion, a wave-piercing tumblehome hull and a stealth design. The ships are intended to support missions including deterrence, sea control and command and control.
