The 173-year-old marine transportation and services company, Hughes Bros., Inc, Edison, N.J., has appointed its sixth generation of family leadership. Effective immediately, Brian Hughes will serve as president, Timothy Hughes as vice president, and Robert Hughes III as secretary-treasurer.

The company announced in a press release that following company tradition, these executive roles will rotate annually among the sixth-generation leadership. The fifth generation, comprised of Robert J. Hughes Jr., William Hughes Jr., and Joseph Hughes, will transition to active roles on the board of directors and will continue to provide guidance to the company, the press release said.

Founded in 1852, the company began as a small shipyard in New Brunswick, N.J. Under the direction of James Hughes Sr., operations included barges on the Delaware and Raritan Canal and later expanded to coastwise routes. James Hughes Jr. and his sons Bill Sr., Bob Sr., and Jim transformed the operation into an ICC-certified water carrier, establishing Hughes Bros. in 1945 to handle chartering and sales.

Today, the company owns and operates a fleet of deck barges, hopper barges, and jobsite tugs. It transports oversized cargo, manages special event jobs on the water, and operates a full-service shipyard with three floating drydocks in Brooklyn, N.Y.
