Gunderson Marine & Iron, Portland, Ore., and Advanced American Construction, Portland, Ore., have named Joe Henry vice president of preconstruction for both companies.
Henry will lead early project evaluation, estimating, planning, and pursuit strategy for marine, heavy civil, and industrial projects. He will work with company leadership, operations, and engineering teams to evaluate opportunities, identify project risks, and develop plans ahead of execution.
“Preconstruction is where many of the decisions that determine a project’s success are made,” said Dee Burch, CEO and owner of Advanced American Construction and Gunderson Marine & Iron. “Joe knows how to evaluate complex work, identify challenges early and bring the right people together around a strong plan.”
Henry joins the companies from Stacy Witbeck, Alameda, Calif., where he served as estimating manager. His recent work included preconstruction and estimating for Portland’s Earthquake Ready Burnside Bridge Project.
Earlier in his career, Henry spent 15 years with Shimmick Construction, Irvine, Calif., advancing through structural engineering and estimating roles before becoming estimating manager for the company’s Southwest Region.
Henry has led estimating efforts on more than $4 billion in alternative-delivery projects and successfully bid more than $1 billion in design-bid-build work, according to the companies. His project experience includes bridges, transportation and transit projects, water and wastewater infrastructure, and other major civil construction programs in Oregon, California, Hawaii, and Texas.

Henry holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Oregon State University and is a licensed professional engineer in California.
