Everett Ship Repair LLC (ESR), Everett, Wash., has acquired a large floating drydock from General Dynamics NASSCO, San Diego, enhancing its capability to service military and commercial vessels in Puget Sound. The purchase price was not disclosed.

The 40-year-old drydock, formerly known as NASSCO Builder, has been renamed Hercules. It was recently towed from San Diego to Everett by the tug Delta Deanna, operated by Baydelta Maritime LLC, San Francisco, and built by ESR's sister company, Nichols Brothers Boat Builders, Freeland, Wash.

With a lifting capacity of 35,000 long tons, an inside beam of 135', and a length of 820', Hercules significantly expands ESR’s capacity to service larger vessels, the company said. The new dry-dock will support both commercial and government customers, including the Navy, Coast Guard, and Washington State Ferries.

“The arrival of Hercules marks a new era for Everett Ship Repair,” Gavin Higgins, CEO of Everett Ship Repair, said in a statement. “This drydock is not just an investment in our company — it’s an investment in the region’s maritime infrastructure and supports the rebalance of the country’s military to respond to the challenges of the Indo-Pacific theater. Having the Hercules right here in Everett means we can better support the growth of our shipyard, the needs of our customers, and the economic vitality of the community.”

The acquisition adds to ESR’s existing fleet of two drydocks, the Faithful Servant (7,500 LT) and the Emerald Lifter (1,800 LT). ESR said that Hercules will begin operations in October, following recertification of its crane and commissioning of onboard systems.

In addition to boosting ESR’s repair capabilities, the new drydock is expected to create job opportunities in the region, the company said, noting it anticipates an increase in demand for skilled workers, including welders, pipefitters, electricians, and machinists.

“We’re proud to carry forward the legacy of the Hercules,” said Jon Shaton, ESR’s general manager. “This drydock has already served the industry well, and now, as part of Everett Ship Repair, it will continue to play a critical role in keeping ships safe, reliable, and operational for years to come.”

NASSCO announced it took delivery of its new drydock in August.
