Detyens Shipyards Inc., North Charleston, S.C., has been awarded two separate contracts to perform work on the U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command (MSC) Henry J. Kaiser class fleet replenishment oilers USNS Pecos (T-AO 197) and USNS Leroy Grumman (T-AO 195). The deals are worth nearly $35 million combined.
The first award is a $17,293,543 firm-fixed-price contract for a 104-calendar day shipyard availability for the deactivation availability of the 677′ USNS Pecos. The contract includes a base period and two options for additional work and time which, if exercised, would increase the cumulative value of this contract to $17,380,148.
Work will commence at the lay-berth location for a dead-tow to Detyens’ facility in North Charleston, on or about Jan. 20, 2025, and is expected to be completed by May 4, 2025.
Built by Avondale Shipyard, Inc., New Orleans, and christened in 1989, Pecos is being deactivated after serving as part of the MSC fleet for 35 years. During its career, Pecos served in the Persian Gulf during both Operation Desert Storm and Operation Enduring Freedom.
The second award is a $17,443,181 firm-fixed-price contract for 135-calendar day shipyard availability for the midterm availability and dry docking of the 677′ USNS Leroy Grumman., also built by Avondale Shipyard and commissioned in 1989. The contract includes a base work package and three unexercised options for additional work and time which, if exercised, would increase the cumulative value of this contract to $17,671,056.
Work will be performed in North Charleston, beginning March 18, 2025, and is expected to be completed by July 30, 2025.
Detyens was one of three bidders for the USNS Pecos project and one of four for the USNS Leroy Grumman project. Both deals are small business set-aside contracts.
