The Coast Guard said its watchstanders at Sector Houston-Galveston were notified at approximately 9:50 p.m. on Tuesday of a fuel oil discharge from a vessel that allided with Pier 32.
Photos shared by the Coast Guard show the vessel involved in the incident is the 10,029-dwt FWN Merchant, a 381'x58' geared tweendecker built in 2013.
To limit the impact of the spill, the Galveston Ship Channel has been closed from Gulf Copper's drydocking and rig repair facility to the Pelican Island Causeway Bridge.
The source of the discharge has been secured, though the amount spilled is under investigation, according to the Coast Guard. No injuries or impacts to wildlife have been reported.
The Coast Guard said it is partnering with the Texas General Land Office and the responsible party, Forestwave Navigation BV, Groningen, the Netherlands, to respond, with personnel and assets on scene.
Air monitoring and safety assessment efforts are ongoing.
