Ammonia-to-power solutions provider Amogy has expanded its operations into South Korea with the opening of an office in the Pangyo Techno Valley. Amogy said the move positions the company closer to key investors and partners, including SK Innovation, Samsung Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai, Hanwha, SV Investment, and Korea Zinc.
Amogy noted South Korea's commitment to ammonia and hydrogen fuel technologies, supported by national policies promoting clean energy, played a significant role in their decision to establish a local presence. In 2024, the country hosted the world’s first auction for electricity generation using hydrogen and ammonia under the Clean Hydrogen Production Standard (CHPS). Additionally, the Distributed Energy Act (DEA), recently enacted to promote grid stability through distributed generation, is expected to drive demand for alternative energy sources, Amogy said.
“With transformative policies like CHPS and DEA, Korea is projected to generate 2% of its electricity from hydrogen and ammonia by 2030, increasing to 7% by 2035,” said Dr. Stone Zhang, Amogy’s managing director. “Amogy is partnering with SK Innovation, HD Hyundai Infracore, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Hanwha to develop ammonia-fueled solutions for distributed power generation and maritime applications. This new office will facilitate closer collaboration with industry players committed to decarbonization,” Zhang said.
In September 2024, Amogy demonstrated its technology by launching the world’s first ammonia-powered maritime vessel. Following a $56 million venture financing investment, the company noted it is advancing toward commercializing its solutions, with a focus on reducing emissions in the shipping and power generation industries.
