When dealing with the Coast Guard, we often forget that it is a branch of the U.S. military and sometimes dismiss the service as a nuisance or a bunch of kids who don't know anything.

These young Coasties board our vessels wearing stainless side arms, appear intimidating, and look around as if we're hiding something. Usually, all they're looking for is safety equipment that's hopefully readily available for use. They are the equivalent of OSHA when it comes to workplace safety on U.S. waters.

Many of you think that the Marine Safety Office exists just to slow your construction projects down and that many Coast Guard inspectors know little or nothing about vessel construction. I agree to an extent, but rather than look at it as a negative you should try to work with inspectors and share some of your marine industry experience. This way, everyone wins. You've gained the respect of the Coastie and your newbuild project moves along seamlessly.

Many of you must pass muster with the Coast Guard to receive a Certificate of Inspection to legally operate your vessel. This is not the time to decide that you know more than the Coast Guard. Here are a few pointers:

  • Make sure you are on board for the inspection.
  • Make sure that every system on your vessel is in good working order.
  • Make sure you are the point person, or have a single knowledgeable point person. You don't need to confuse the inspector by having several people pipe in when they ask a question.
  • Make certain your crew knows what they're doing on the vessel. I've seen some vessels come under scrutiny because a new crew person didn't answer safety questions correctly.
  • Respect Coast Guard inspectors. Remember that they have the authority, not you. If you have a valid argument about something, bring it up in a way that isn't intimidating or disrespectful. Again, both of you will win.

The Coast Guard serves us well and they're not going anywhere, so getting along with them will serve you well in the future.
