Ribcraft USA, Marblehead, Mass., has recently delivered the company's 6.5 model to the Milford, Conn., Fire Department.
According to Ribcraft, the department had operated a smaller Ribcraft model for nearly 20 years before deciding it was time for an upgrade to meet growing operational demands on Long Island Sound and its tributaries. The new 21' vessel is expected to enhance search and rescue operations, support environmental protection efforts, and conduct side-scan sonar missions in areas inaccessible to the department’s larger fireboat.
Ribcraft worked with Milford fire officials to customize the boat, using the department’s original rigid hull inflatable boat as a reference for design and outfitting. Powered by a 150-hp Yamaha outboard, the Ribcraft 6.5 can reach speeds over 45 mph.
The boat is equipped with a center console and bench seat, two jockey-style pod seats, a full-size windscreen, and a T-top with aluminum hard top. Electronics include Garmin GPS and radar, VHF, LED light bar, Whelen hailer/siren, and 360-degree scene lighting.
For durability and safety, Ribcraft said the vessel features a red multi-chambered Hypalon tube with bow reinforcement, boarding wear patches, and grab handles. The deep-V hull and high bow are designed for stability and maneuverability in rough waters.
Originally developed as a surf rescue craft, the company said the Ribcraft 6.5 has become a common platform for fire departments, law enforcement agencies, and rescue units because of its versatility and reliability.
