The Seaman II position includes variety of duties in connection with the operation and maintenance of marine vessels and related facilities and equipment for the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

** Assist the Marine Director in general operations of the Marine Department assets.
** Supervise cadets as required to support general operations of the Marine Department.
**  Provides boat shop supervision of equipment inventory, repair, general cleanliness and security.
** Provides practical seamanship instruction to students and marine department personnel, which includes skills such as line handling, splicing line and wire, use of anchor machinery, boat davits and rescue equipment.
** Supervises and assists in vessel maintenance projects including steel preservation, painting, welding, bilge and tank cleaning.
** Operates and instructs proper use of davits, winches, windlasses and gangways.
** Supervises and assists in maintenance of piers, floats and Marine Department buildings, as directed.
** Provides supervision and inventory of paints, painting equipment, solvents and chemicals, as directed.
** Performs scraping, chipping, painting and/or varnishing boat surfaces.
** Engages in maintenance activities such as lubricating marine machinery and equipment.
** Participates in handing of mooring lines for the securing or releasing of vessels.
** Participate in the raising and dropping of anchors, handling gangways, and performing related work as required.
** Participation in random drug testing program as it pertains to safety sensitive position.
** Performs other duties, as assigned.
** Shift Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.* (*Initial assignment only – subject to change according to Administration)

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

At least one (1) year of experience as a seaman in the Navy, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, governmental organization or similar marine seamanship experience. Possess knowledge of seamanship terminology, equipment and devices for operating marine vessels, and types of materials and methods for repairing and cleaning marine vessels. Skilled in using seamanship hand tools and knot-tying.

Preferred Qualifications

Possess current and valid Merchant Mariner Credential, STCW Basic Safety Training endorsement a plus; Massachusetts Hydraulic Operators license; Class 2 or CDL Driver’s License.

Salary

Biweekly: $2,008.85 / Annually: $52,230.10 (Group 14/Step 1)
