Kongsberg Maritime's dynamic positioning digital survey (DPDS) has received approval in principle from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), marking a step forward in digitalizing vessel surveys.
ABS noted in a statement the DPDS application continuously collects data from a vessel’s dynamic positioning (DP) system, allowing surveys to be conducted remotely rather than requiring in-person assessments on a fixed schedule. According to Kongsberg, this shift reduces vessel downtime, enhances operational cost-efficiency, and lowers fuel consumption.
“ABS provides the most advanced and efficient survey capabilities in the world, and the DPDS app from Kongsberg is another step forward in the evolution of digital solutions for offshore assets,” said Joshua Divin, ABS senior vice president, Western Operations. “We are proud to work alongside Kongsberg to help support the safe and practical application of advanced technologies to optimize performance.”
Dynamic positioning systems are integral to vessel operations, utilizing thrusters, propellers, and sensors to maintain position or follow a designated course, even in challenging conditions. ABS said the DPDS app enables remote monitoring and analysis, requiring evaluation by a surveyor trained by Kongsberg.
Erik Korssjøen, vice president of digital products at Kongsberg Maritime said, “We see that the maritime industry is increasingly recognizing the benefits of data-driven verification for machinery and auxiliary systems, not just DP."
