Moran Towing Corp., New Canaan, Conn., announced that its newest escort and ship-assist tug, William E Moran, has entered service in New York. The vessel is among the largest and most powerful in the Moran fleet.

Built by Master Boat Builders Inc., Coden, Ala., and designed by Robert Allan Ltd., the RApport 2800 series vessel is the first in Moran's new class of ASD tractor tugs. Measuring 92'x40', the vessel delivers over 80 metric tons of bollard pull.

The new series of tugs is purpose-built and equipped to manage the increasing size and complexity of vessels calling at U.S. ports, according to Moran officials.

“These tugs represent a leap forward in our ongoing commitment to providing best-in-class maritime solutions,” said Sean Perreault, Moran's chief operating officer, maritime services. “Through our collaboration with Master Boat Builders and Robert Allan Ltd., we have leveraged our design expertise to create vessels that deliver exceptional performance and compliance while offering adaptability to meet our customers’ evolving demands.”

The William E Moran is ABS Escort-rated and powered by EPA Tier 4 Caterpillar 3516E engines, producing a combined 6,770 hp. It is LEV (Low Emission Vessel) certified, significantly reducing NOx emissions. The tug features twin Kongsberg US255 Z-drive propulsion units.

The Wiliam E Moran features expanded accommodations, improved working spaces, and modern onboard systems, including a fully integrated Rose Point electronic chart system and Starlink satellite connectivity, according to Moran.

Additional vessels in this class are under construction and expected to deliver later this year, Moran said.
