Corvus Energy has introduced Blue Whale NxtGen Power, a lithium iron phosphate battery system designed for tugs, workboats, offshore vessels and ferries with high power demands.

The system is the first product developed through a partnership between Corvus Energy and BYD Energy Storage. The companies signed a memorandum of understanding in December 2025 and a strategic cooperation agreement in May to jointly develop marine battery systems using high-rate LFP technology.

BYD supplies the battery cells and manufactures the cell stacks. Corvus is responsible for the system design and architecture, including marine safety features, battery management systems, cybersecurity, a digital battery passport and class approval. Corvus will also conduct final assembly and testing and provide lifecycle service support.

Blue Whale NxtGen Power is intended for vessels whose performance is driven primarily by power demand rather than total energy capacity. Target applications include tugs and workboats, offshore vessels using batteries for power optimization and large ferries that require rapid charging between crossings.

This partnership will strengthen and expand our product portfolio and support the maritime industry’s transition to zero-emission operations.”

The new system is based on Corvus’ NxtGen platform and shares components with other products in the line, including its stack interface, battery-module design, battery management system and cell-string assembly.

According to Corvus, the common architecture is designed to simplify vessel installation, maintenance, crew training and spare-parts management. Installation and service procedures will remain largely unchanged for operators already using Blue Whale NxtGen systems.

Corvus and BYD will present the new battery system alongside Corvus’ broader LFP portfolio Sept. 2 at the SMM maritime trade show in Hamburg, Germany.
