A 53-year-old Detroit man has died after leaping off the back of the Detroit Princess riverboat into the icy Detroit River Wednesday morning, according to published media reports.
Detroit police told Michigan Live that the man jumped from the Detroit Princess, which is docked near the Cobo Convention Center. However, Michigan Live reported that Cobo Center security told the Coast Guard that the man was walking on river ice and fell in.
According to local news sources, the unidentified man was rescued from the river by Coast Guard personnel shortly after he jumped or fell. The Coast Guard buoy tender Hollyhock was in the area and responded to a 911 call from someone who saw the man go into the water, and deployed a small boat to pull him out.
The man was pronounced dead upon arrival at Detroit Receiving Hospital. His name has not been released.
