The Coast Guard has launched Navita, a digital platform intended to simplify the application and issuance process for merchant mariner credentials.

Navita is designed to reduce paper-based applications and manual processing through an electronic application system. The platform is also intended to reduce common application errors and provide mariners with greater visibility into the credentialing process.

“Our goal is to make it easier for mariners to get the credentials they need to work,” Rear Adm. Rob Compher, assistant commandant for prevention policy, said in a statement. “By creating a user-friendly system designed around the mariner experience, a strong maritime workforce is always ready to keep our supply chains moving and our national defense readiness high.”

Current and planned Navita features include:

  • A guided application that flags missing information in real time.
  • Automated fee calculations.
  • Integration with Pay.gov.
  • Online submission of course completion records.
  • Electronic submission of sea service records.

Navita is part of the Coast Guard’s digital transformation strategy, an effort to update how the service gathers and shares information.

Mariners can create profiles and submit credential applications and supporting documents through the National Maritime Center website.
