American Roll-On/Roll-Off Carrier Group Inc. has added the large car and truck carrier ARC Freedom to its U.S.-flag fleet. The vessel will operate in the Maritime Security Program, which makes commercially operated vessels available to support U.S. military sealift needs.
ARC Freedom has capacity for nearly 8,000 car-equivalent units across 13 vehicle decks. Five of the decks are hoistable to accommodate cargo of different heights. The vessel has a 21.3'-high main deck opening and a stern ramp rated for rolling loads of up to 353 short tons.
ARC said the configuration allows the ship to carry vehicles, heavy equipment and project cargo, including V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft and CH-47 helicopters.
“As America marks 250 years of independence, ARC Freedom is a fitting name for a vessel that will carry the U.S. flag around the world, serving our customers in peacetime and standing ready to serve our nation when called,” said Eric Ebeling, ARC’s president and CEO.
Stephen M. Carmel, administrator of Marad, said the vessel’s addition to the Maritime Security Program would strengthen the U.S.-flag fleet’s ability to respond to military requirements.
