EPMAR Corporation has produced the SynDeck™ marine line since 1983 to support the manufacture and repair of military, commercial ships, and offshore vessels.  This product line has grown to meet globally recognized approval specifications.  Over time Syndeck™ has successfully expanded to serve the ferry, cruise ship, offshore, workboat and inland waterways vessel markets by helping to solve their internal decking challenges.

Three notable characteristics of SynDeck™ products consist of the following:

 PERFORMANCE PROPERTIES

Our products go through stringent performance and safety standards including;

  • Fire Resistance (includes smoke and surface flammability control)
  • Corrosion Protection of Steel (or in some cases aluminum) substrates
  • Wear Resistance
  • Resistance to Mechanical Deformation (includes indentation and impact resistance)
  • Waterproofing
  • Abrasion Resistance
  • Slip Resistance

Meeting these criteria gives SynDeck™ the ability to provide products that can pass qualifications and/or certifications for the following:

  • International Maritime Organization (IMO)
  • American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)
  • Military Specification (MIL-SPEC)

Approved systems such as the SynDeck™ DecoDeck™ System (Photo 1 and Figure 1) is our longest serving US Navy approved full resin system. This system combines the SynDeck™ RediDeck™ leveling underlayment (the first three coatings layers in Figure 1) and 100% solids IMO Epoxy SS5000 color range series with optional decorative flakes and various epoxy, polyurethane and polyaspartic clear sealers.  It has been used in the Navy for over 20 years and is specified to create an ultra-lightweight but waterproof, easy to maintain deck covering.

WEIGHT OF MATERIALS

The efficiencies that come from the ultra lightweight materials are characteristic of the SynDeck Ultra Lightweight Underlayment system.  The shipbuilding and ship repair industry can benefit tremendously from the high performance given from the lightest possible weight products such as the SynDeck Ultra Lightweight Underlayment (the second coating layer in Figure 1).  This product provides excellent corrosion resistance, levels our irregularities, grades and contours, is non-porous, completely waterproof and weight less than 1 lb. per square foot at ¼ inch installed.  As opposed to concrete which weighs 3.2 lbs per square foot at ¼ inch installed.

Let us show you how to take the weight out without losing performance. The cost-of-use savings (based on material plus maintenance costs) can be significant.

 EVOLVING RENEWABLE MATERIALS

In this respect, EPMAR supports sustainability by developing SynDeck™ products that incorporate renewable raw materials.  These raw materials have a lower carbon footprint, which means that they are less petroleum (fossil fuel) based.  Consequentially raw materials that are not produced as result of some carbon emission process.  The renewable raw materials can fall into three categories:

1. Chemical products derived from agricultural raw materials. Materials which are bio-based.

2. Chemical products from bio-circular materials which are using waste and residue of biological origin.

3. Chemical products derived from circular materials as a result of recycling.

SynDeck™ underlayments contain between 50% and 55% circular materials coming from recycling.  SynDeck™ upcoming coatings such as the bond coats, grout-sealers, color coats, and topcoats may contain up to approximately 5% derived from agricultural raw materials.
