General responsibilities:

     The Electro Technical Officer (ETO) assists the Chief Engineer with the overall operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and electronic shipboard systems and equipment.  

     Duties include routine maintenance and repair of electrical and electronics equipment, maintaining an inventory of spare parts and supplies necessary for maintenance and repairs, and assisting with outside contractors for the installation and repair of electrical and electronic shipboard systems.

     Must be proficient in independently interpreting results from a variety of electrical and electronic test equipment including oscilloscopes, function generators, calibrators, analog and digital multimeters, megohmmeters, and other related equipment.

     May be called upon to demonstrate testing and operation for regulatory bodies (ABS, USCG, etc)

     The ETO will ensure cleanliness of the ship engineering spaces in their work areas.  These work areas will include engine room control consoles and alarm monitoring equipment; electrical generation, conversion, and distribution equipment; high voltage rooms; frequency converter rooms; main propulsion and control equipment; bridge navigation and communication consoles; IT system rooms and data network spaces.

     Duties also include tracking of all programmable logic controllers and software versions and updates as required.

     Additionally, the ETO will ensure that the vessel’s maintenance and repair records are properly and accurately maintained in the computerized maintenance management system.

     While the ETO position is not specifically designated in a training role, a key role for all crew members is to support the training of cadets and the unique mission of the Academy.

     All selected candidates must comply with Mass. Maritime Academy military customs, uniforms and ranks and participate in random drug screening.

     All selected candidates must participate in the annual Sea Term, Mini-Cruise, shipyard periods, and other vessel deployments or utilizations.  In addition, the candidate must be available for on-call periods while the vessel is alongside on nights and weekends.

Specific minimum Qualifications and Requirements: 

     Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in recognized academic discipline.

     Hold a recognized trade qualification from a technical college/ apprenticeship program or equivalent certification.

     Hold USCG Merchant Mariner’s Credential as Electro-Technical Officer with appropriate STCW endorsements for international voyages.

     At least 2 years’ experience as Shipboard ETO or military equivalent.

     Superior troubleshooting skills and techniques.

     Experience with High Voltage diesel-electric propulsion systems.

     Experience with Furuno navigation and marine communication systems.

     Possess strong time management skills: able to handle multiple tasks, set priorities and meet deadlines.

     Exhibit excellent computer, oral and written communication skills.

     Experience with computerized maintenance management systems.

     Understand the unique mission of the university as a maritime academy.

Salary: $85,000 to $90,000, based on education, qualifications and experience.
