Director of Marine Operations
The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has a three-part mission to conduct research in coastal ocean and estuarine science, educate students and citizens, and provide advisory service to policy makers, industry, and the public. VIMS provides these services to Virginia, the nation, and the world. Chartered in 1940, VIMS is currently among the largest marine research and education centers in the United States
The Marine Operations Department at VIMS is comprised of a group of dedicated professionals whose primary function is to provide safe access to the marine environment for all students, staff, faculty and the public to support needs and the VIMS strategic initiatives as they relate to our vessels, field support services, instrument fabrication, equipment repair and servicing.
The Marine Operations department of VIMS is seeking a talented and competent Director of Marine Operations to join our team of esteemed professionals for a unique opportunity to contribute to the interface between science, education, and marine operations.
The DMO provides leadership, guidance, and expert recommendations for Institute-level decisions regarding marine operations, policies and procedures that ensure optimum safety, readiness, efficiency, and effective use of resources to achieve the Institute’s goals and objectives.
Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer (COO), the Director of Marine Operations (DMO) is charged with oversight of all phases of the marine operations organization through the leadership of approximately 16 staff (direct report include; the Senior Captain, Finance Manager, Port Engineer, and Marine Safety Officer). Oversight includes, strategic planning, financial and resource management (operating budget of 1.7M), safety & training programs, vessel fleet maintenance, and administration of the marine safety and diving programs.
