This year’s diesel engine directory includes 25 engine manufacturers offering a total of 458 diesel engine models, ranging from 24 hp to 21,760 hp.

Proposed and new regulations affecting engine emission standards continue to be a major concern for marine diesel engine manufacturers.

In May 2004, as part of its Clean Air Nonroad Diesel Rule, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency finalized new requirements for nonroad diesel fuel. The agency said the new requirements would lower the allowable levels of sulfur in fuel used in marine diesels by 99 percent. These fuel improvements were designed to create “immediate and significant” environmental and public health benefits.

The new rules knocked Lister-Petter Inc. out of this year’s Power Guide. A spokesman for the Olathe, Kan., engine manufacturer said the company expects to debut a number of EPA-compliant engines in the spring of 2006. If so, look for them to return to the diesel directory next year. 

In addition, the EPA has proposed more stringent emission standards for all new commercial, recreational and auxiliary marine diesel engines “except the very large engines used for propulsion on deep-sea vessels.”

The new standards now under consideration would apply to marine diesels used in all applications and diesels rated at or below 37kw (50 hp), which were previously included in the non-road standards.

For those who want the latest information regarding the regulations, the EPA’s Alan Stout is scheduled to deliver an update at this year’s Pacific Maritime Expo (PME) in Seattle. PME will be held Nov. 17-19. 

Catepillar Inc. began manufacturing new models in its 3500C-HD marine engine line in June. According to Caterpillar, the new engines offer up to 21 percent more power than the company’s 3500B-HD Series II 1600 engines. The engines are designed to achieve higher engine performance at a lower cost.

Italian engine manufacturer Iveco, which produced 430,000 engines worldwide in 2004, launched Iveco Motors of North America in January 2004. This is the first year the company appears under its own heading in the directory. Iveco engines previously appeared under Lister-Petter.

Headquartered in Carol Stream, Ill., the company’s plan for North America is to offer U.S., Canadian and Mexican customers three engine types (Cursor, NEF and Vector) that can fill any engine need.

Iveco of North America spent its first year putting together an extensive parts and service distribution network in order to answer customers concerns about new parts having to come from Europe.

The company wanted to build up an inventory completely independent of Europe with plenty of parts on hand, according to Vincenzo Perrone, the company’s general manager. Perrone said the benefits of his company’s engines are performance, power-to-weight ratio, and fuel savings.  

Guascor, headquartered in Spain, moved its U.S. operations from Miami to St. Rose, La., this past year.

Guascor markets a line of engines that ranges from 575 hp to 1,550 hp. All are IMO (International Maritime Organization) and EPA compliant.

Kelly Lacy, Guascor’s general manager, said the move was prompted by a desire to be closer to the workboat market.

“We picked the area because it’s centrally located,” said Lacy. “Not only are we closer to the pushboats in the New Orleans area, but we also handle all of the Caribbean from here.”

Lacy said his company, too, has spent a good deal of time finding service companies throughout the Gulf South. “We needed to increase our service area,” he said.

Lacy admitted that breaking into the workboat market in the U.S. was more difficult than company officials had initially expected, but now the company has a better understanding of the marketplace and its customers. “We’re not looking to become a Caterpillar,” Lacy said. “We may produce 400 engines a year. And our engines tend to be a little higher [priced], but we make up for that in technical support. Our first customers are still as happy as they were the first day.”

Both Iveco and Guascor, along with most of the other diesel engine manufacturers, have embraced the old saying that sales sells the first engine and service sells the rest. 

For the past two years, MTU Friedrichshafen chose not to use  Detroit Diesel in its title listing. This year the company has put
the designation back in as “MTU Detroit Diesel.”
