Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering
Bristol Harbor Group, Inc. (BHGI) offers design services from the conceptual design through the detail design and shipyard support. Some of BHGI’s design services include but are not limited to hull design, structural design and analysis, stability analysis, and weight estimating. BHGI’s marine engineering practice focuses on the design of new vessels, repowering’s, and mechanical and electrical upgrades. BHGI’s marine engineers have many years of hands on experience, both aboard vessels and in shipyards. This practical experience allows our marine engineers to better understand both operational and technical issues.
Finite Element Analyses (FEA)
BHGI’s mechanical engineers are well versed in finite element analysis (FEA). We utilize NEi and Autodesk NASTRAN, and FEMAP to determine stress and deflection. Our engineers conduct analyses on a variety of projects including but not limited to: simple and complex beam element models, local and global shell models for vessels and foundations, coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and FEA in a variety of sea states to determine vessel hog and sag along a wave train, thermal analysis for cryogenically controlled cargo, and much more.
Computational Fluid Dynamics Analyses (CFD)
BHGI performs CFD analyses using CD-adapco’s STARCCM+ program. Hull models are generated by BHGI’s engineers and are run at various conditions to predict the performance of the vessel. CFD results include final waterline, resistance, wave train, pressure plots, and a variety of other analyses. BHGI uses these results to determine the best hull for the client’s needs.
BHGI provides technical support and consulting services to vessel owners, charterers, and operators. These services can be in support of new construction projects, modifications, regularly scheduled dry docks or more comprehensive maintenance periods. This can include anything from shipyard selection to construction oversight. BHGI also provides life-cycle management and fleet reviews, among many other consulting services.
LNG Bunker Barge
BHGI has extensive knowledge of LNG and has been involved in LNG projects since 2009. BHGI was contracted by Conrad Orange to design a 232’, 2,000m³ LNG Bunker Barge. It is the first LNG bunker barge in North America. It features one tank equipped with MARK III Flex cargo containment technology from GTT (Gaztransport & Technigaz). The barge is expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2018. This barge will be a critical supply chain component in the ongoing efforts around the world to reduce the environmental impact of maritime activity through the conversion of ships to LNG.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
BHGI has been tasked with a number of projects through our second five-year IDIQ contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Philadelphia District. Some of the projects BHGI has recently worked on include: The design of a USACE wicket lifting vessel for operation at Olmstead Lock & Dam on the Ohio River. The vessel is expected to be delivered in the 4th quarter of 2017. BHGI will also continue to provide design and engineering support to the USACE for the NASA barge PEGASUS. BHGI has also been tasked to perform design work and technical assistance to modify and develop upon an existing Marine Design Center debris collection vessel, REYNOLDS, a multipurpose vessel design for the National Park Service, Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island.
Conrad Oil Barges
In 2015, BHGI was contracted by Conrad Shipyard in Amelia, LA to develop the design of an 80k BBL ATB oil barge unit for Vane Brothers Company. The lead vessel will be delivered in the 4th quarter of 2017 with two to follow on units at six-month intervals. Conrad also delivered a BHGI designed 55k BBL asphalt barge to Vane Brothers in the 1st quarter of 2017.
New York Power Authority Replacement Tugs
BHGI was contracted by the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to design and perform construction support services for two new tug vessels. The tugs will be used for the deployment, retrieval and maintenance of the Lake Erie ice boom. The construction for the JONCAIRE II has been completed. BHGI is currently working on the design and engineering for the B-2 BREAKER. BHGI has developed the vessel specification and NYPA recently solicited bids for the construction of the B-2 BREAKER tug.
NASA Barge PEGASUS
In our first five-year contract with the USACE, BHGI was tasked with designing and engineering the modifications to lengthen the NASA Barge PEGASUS from 260’ to 310’ to accommodate NASA's new Space Launch System. Detail design work included both local and global FEA analysis. Through our second five-year contract with the USACE, BHGI will continue to provide design and engineering support to the USACE for the PEGASUS.
