New Orleans — Vessel traffic on the Mississippi River returned to normal Sunday as Tropical Storm Karen weakened and then dissipated in the Gulf of Mexico. The U.S. Coast Guard rescinded all vessel traffic restrictions on the river around midnight.
The Carnival Elation followed the Carnival Conquest into the Port of New Orleans around 12:30 pm. The Conquest had arrived at the Erato Street Cruise Terminal in downtown New Orleans at noon.
“We always prepare for the worst and hope for the best and this time it thankfully turned out to be the latter,” said Gary LaGrange, port president and CEO.
Seven cargo vessels are scheduled to arrive Monday.
“We appreciate the support and patience of all of our customers during this time,” LaGrange said.
Officials with all deep-draft ports, river pilot associations, industry groups, National Weather Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, and the Coast Guard were in constant contact throughout the event.
