Research vessel Rafael maps Barnegat Bay

The USGS spent much of last week in Barnegat Bay, in New Jersey, as the research vessel Rafael used sonar to map the bay’s bottom in 3D, completing the first complete charting and depth-sounding the bay has had in decades, according to the Asbury Park Press. One of the goals is to create a circulation model that will help researchers understand pollution levels and how to protect the bay’s ecosystem. Along the way, however, everyone in the bay stands to get a much better understanding of the ocean floor.
