NEWS BITTS – Time running out on vessel discharge exemption

The regulation exemption for vessel discharges under the Clean Water Act’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System will run out on Feb. 6. The exemption was originally scheduled to expire on Dec. 19, but Judge Susan Illston extended the stay for 48 days. Once the extension expires, owners must comply with the EPA’s Vessel General Permit, which applies to commercial vessels such as towboats and barges of 79′ or more in length. Vessels under 79′ need only comply with the permit’s ballast water requirements.
