NEWS BITTS – Deal saves ferry service

An agreement has been struck to keep the Saint John, New Brunswick, to Digby, Nova Scotia, ferry operating – at least for the next two years. Bay Ferries Ltd., Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, citing reduced traffic and increased costs, had announced an end of service effective Oct. 31. The deal, announced in November, includes a commitment of $4 million (Can.) from the federal government and $2 million each from the governments of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. “During these two years, stakeholders, including all three levels of government, will focus their energies and skills on identifying a viable long-term solution for this service,” said Nova Scotia-based Federal Foreign Minister Peter MacKay. – Bob Gustafson
