New Orleans braces for possible barge-related flooding damage

NEW ORLEANS – Officials here are bracing for possible flooding caused by an overflowing Mississippi River. One of the biggest concerns? Damage caused by runaway barges. While Ken Hocke and Dale DuPont are reporting on the damage the floods might cause to barge operators’ bottom lines, New Orleans city officials, with Katrina still fresh in their minds, has a plan for barges that may threaten the city’s river levees: “We can’t afford to have barges running loose, breaking levees,” said New Orleans City Council President Jackie Clarkson. “That’s unacceptable now … We’re going to sink them.”
