New Alaskan ferry service buys SEACOR crewboat for $2m

COFFMAN COVE, Alaska – Rainforest Islands Ferry, a new ferry service based here, told Alaska’s public broadcasting system that it has purchased a crewboat from SEACOR for $2 million. It will retrofit the 160-foot Ashley Alyse McCall to carry passengers and vehicles between Ketchikan, Prince of Wales, Wrangell, and Mitkof Island. The boat will be renamed the Rainforest Islander.

The McCall was built in 1992 by Gulf Craft and has a maximum speed of 24 knots, with six KTA19 Cummins 6808HP engines.

After the retrofit, there will be room for 70 passengers and 14 vehicles, according to the report, and they hope to have the service running by mid July.

The purchase and retrofit are being paid for with a $3 million loan from the US Department of Agriculture.
