MARINETTE, Wisc. – The Journal Sentinel is reporting that Marinette Marine Corp. is planning to hire hundreds of workers this year to help with construction of Navy Littoral Combat Ships, for which it just announced $715 million in new contracts. Just recently, the company also announced a $90 million contract, along with Kvichak Marine, to build 40 Response Boats – Medium for the U.S. Coast Guard.
The AP reports that Marinette’s work on the Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship series, which it has split with Austal USA thus far, already accounts for 20 percent of its overall business. Marinette has plans to deliver the USS Fort Worth by Dec. 31, working under defense contractor Lockheed Martin.
The Navy has plans to purchase 55 of the 377-foot Littoral Combat Ships in total over the course of 15 years.
Austal announced its own new contracts for $691 million this week as well.
