NEW ORLEANS – If your company name starts with H-a-r and ends in e-y, you were a winner at this year’s fifth annual WorkBoat Environmental Awards. Harley Marine Services, Seattle, won the Comprehensive Environmental Management Plan Award and Harvey Gulf International Marine, New Orleans, won the Environmental Initiative Award.
This year 11 companies applied for the Environmental Initiative Award and three applied for the Comprehensive Environmental Management Plan Award.
The Awards Selection Committee also presented a Special Judges’ Recognition Award to the Port of Seattle’s Marine Maintenance for an innovative vacuum scrubber system developed to clean concrete docks without knocking any debris into the water.
Harvey Gulf’s winning initiative was the design and construction of three 300′ diesel-electric OSVs built to both Enviro + and Green Passport standards. The three boats, the Harvey Supporter, the Sisuaq and the Harvey Champion were designed by STX Marine and built by Eastern Shipbuilding Group.
Harley Marine Services won the management plan award for its commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainability and a smaller carbon footprint. In 2009, HMS worked with the U.S. Coast Guard to develop “Standards of Care for Lightering and Bunkering,” which is now being used in four Coast Guard sectors.
