Geo Shipyard delivers twin cat crewboats to Axxis

Geo Shipyard Inc., New Iberia, La., recently delivered two catamaran crewboats to Axxis Drilling Co., Broussard, La. The new vessels, Truman and Hoover, measure 36’×12’×3′ and will be used to support Axxis’ inland and near-shore rigs.
“These are the first two we’ve built for them,” said David LeCompte, Geo’s vice president and co-owner. “We’ve been doing their repairs, but these are the first two we’ve actually built.”
Morrelli & Melvin Design & Engineering Inc., Long Beach, Calif., designed the vessels that are made of 5086 aluminum. “It’s the same design [as sister vessels built elsewhere],” said LeCompte, “but we put in some added frames, a little thicker bottom then the five boats that were done at another yard.”
Twin 300-hp Mercury outboards provide each boat’s main propulsion, pushing the vessels through the water at a top speed of 36 knots. “They get to their destination promptly with a speed of 36 knots when needed but mostly are run at an economical speed of 28 knots,” said LeCompte.
The boats have seating for 13 passengers. The seats were built and furnished by Sterlings Upholstery in New Iberia, La. “The aft two seat backs on the port side fold down to form a day bed for the captain to rest between trips,” said LeCompte.
Capacities include 400 gals. of fuel and 30 gals. water.
The vessels’ electronics packages feature a Furuno 1834, 10″ color radar and GPS unit; Furuno depth sounder; Garmin GPS unit; FLIR night vision camera; Ritchie compass; two Perko 10″ spot lights; and two Icom VHF radios.
The Truman and the Hoover are U.S. Coast Guard-certified, Subchapter T, Lakes, Bays & Sounds for 13 passengers. The vessels are surrounded with aircraft tire bumpers for protection at the docks and rigs.
Axxis is currently refurbishing one of its drilling barges, and LeCompte hopes the company will need additional vessels to support the barge when it’s completed. “Well, they’re talking about it,” he said.
