EU suggests drilling ban in case of safety doubts

BRUSSELS–The EU says European governments should ban new deepwater drilling projects if they have any doubts about their safety.

EU Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger has told EU governments to be rigorous in licensing “new, complex” offshore drilling operations.

He urged them to see if a license must be denied “in light of the Deepwater Horizon accident” in the Gulf of Mexico last April that caused a massive spill.

On Wednesday, Oettinger announced a major revamp of offshore drilling safety in Europe, including much stricter inspections of oil and gas platforms.
